beaches Ibiza

has over sixty beaches, all with different scenery and atmospheres. Whether you want to party on the beach, chill out in a tranquil cove or join the hippies and their bongo drums, there is a beach for everyone.

’s clear waters and golden sands have resulted in sixteen of its beaches being awarded the prestigious EU Blue Flag. The major beaches usually offer good amenities for food, drink and services, however be aware that the more remote beaches may be miles away from the nearest shop to buy water – so go prepared! Some have free sun loungers but many have a rental scheme - just sit down on a spare one and shortly someone will wander over, ask for the fee and give you a receipt.

Cala Bassa – This is a large sandy beach, with plenty of free sun loungers, some water activities available and boat rides to San Antonio. It is far from any shops but there is a restaurant, snack bar and two drinks bars along the beach. I found it attracted more Spanish than English people, with a busy family atmosphere and beach entertainers. A large car parking area is located by the beach.

Cala Conta (Platjes de ses Comptes) – This is really two small beaches, separated by a rocky outcrop in a beautiful bay with very clear waters and stunning views. A very large car park and three restaurants cater for the busy atmosphere, although the toilet facilities are poor. There are quite a few sun loungers to hire at 5 euros per day and at times the beach gets quite crowded with a mixture of all nationalities. A DJ plays a mixture of dance and chill-out music from the above restaurant, giving the beach an upbeat ambience.

Calo de Gracio – Further along the San Antonio coast, this is a pretty beach hidden in a cove surrounded by trees with a large sandy area. It can get quite busy but has a more tranquil atmosphere than some other town beaches. There is a busy restaurant and a small trinket shop selling traditional clothes and gifts. A small car park is located by the beach, although it is within walking distance of San Antonio.

Calo des Moro – This is a very small sandy beach at the end of the ‘sunset strip’ in San Antonio. Popular with English people, the beach gets very busy and crammed with sun loungers, with plenty of noise and activity. There are no beach facilities but a small supermercado is around the corner, along with plenty of bars and hotels surrounding the area.

Cala es Xarcu – A small and secluded beach in a scenic cove near Cala Jondal, that is located at the bottom of a steep, rocky dust track. The beach is pretty, although stony rather than sandy, with a small cluster of sun loungers that are free to use. There is a popular bar and Spanish style fish restaurant that attracts a busy flow of customers from yachts that pull into the bay. It is very far from any other shops so it may be advisable to take your own provisions if required. The atmosphere is fairly quiet with no music and few English people around.

Las Salinas – Certainly one of the trendiest beaches in , this long expanse of sand stretches for 1.5km and is home to several cool bars and restaurants that provide funky music and refreshments direct to your sun lounger if required. Located in a scenic setting with beautiful views, it is serviced well with a large car park, a small mini-supermarket and plenty of eating facilities. The atmosphere is busy and cosmopolitan with a range of nationalities to share the plentiful supply of sun loungers.

Playa d’en Bossa – As the longest beach on the island, this is a long sandy beach with plenty of life and a bustling atmosphere that is popular with English people. Not a place to go if you are seeking some tranquil solitude but there are plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants along the beach, plus water activities and loads of sun loungers to hire. There are also plenty of shops nearby on the main road. The middle section of the beach near Bora Bora tends to get very busy with almost sardine-like sun loungers and loud music, but further along the beach you can find quieter and more spacious areas.

Playa es Cana – This is a long sandy beach which is extremely popular with English families and can get very crowded in the afternoon. There are loads of sun loungers available to hire, along with pedalos and other water activities. The beach is served by a few beachside cafes and bars, but its town location next to the main road means you are not far away from numerous shops and supermercados. There is no specific beach car park although parking is available in the town.

Playa Pinet – One of many small coves in San Antonio Bay, this is a busy family beach with views across the bay. Surrounded by hotels, it is not a remote tranquil beach but it is served by good facilities from three snack bars, along with numerous small shops and cafes on nearby roads. It is ideal for children as there is shallow water and a play area on the beach, plus boat trip rides. It offers a nice sandy area for sunbathing, with sun loungers to rent at 4 euros per day, although this area can become quite crowded.

Playa Porto (Portinatx) – This is quite a small beach (the smallest of the three in Portinatx) with a cafe/snack bar, a small shop and a drinks bar. Sun loungers cost 4 euros per day to hire – parasols, pedalos and diving activities are also available. The view is not particularly scenic, but the atmosphere is family-based, fairly quiet and popular with English people. There is a small parking area by the beach.

Port d’es Torrent - A small but popular beach in an attractive cove, with 3 or 4 beachside cafe/restaurants at family prices. Clear signs show the prices of various water activity equipment to rent and there are plenty of sun loungers available to hire at 4.50 euros per day. Next to the beach are several small shops and mini-supermarkets selling refreshments and a variety of beach equipment. A beach car park was not obvious although parking may be available nearby.

San Antonio (Platja des Reguero) – This is a large, man-made beach that stretches all around the bay. There are plenty of sun loungers that cost 5 euros per day to hire, with various water activities taking place throughout the day. The beach is filled with predominantly English people and the atmosphere is loud and bustling, with dance music played on speakers and volleyball activities etc. It is close to a wide range of cafes, bars, shops etc. on the main road. There is no beach car park as such, but there is some limited parking over the road. Not for those wanting a quiet, tranquil beach as you often get harassed by club promoters and sunglasses sellers (a great place to go if you do want discount club tickets though!)

Cala Boix

The first thing you notice about this beach is its dark coloured sand, which is an unusual grey-black colour. That is after you have climbed down the 50 or so steep steps to get there! However, don’t let this put you off as this is a lovely cove in a beautiful setting. It gets busy during the day but mainly with Spanish people rather than British holidaymakers. There is a small cafe serving drinks and hot food on the beach, but few other amenities.

Cala Tarida

Another steep flight of steps takes you down to this beautiful beach, which has plenty of sun loungers and parasols along its shore. Located near some hotels, it is another very popular beach which can get very busy. There is a small Spar and other restaurants located by the beach, along with a big car park.
