Important things you need to know before moving to Ibiza.

The NIE Process
Since the issuing of the Royal Decree 240/2007 of 16th February (Articles 3.3 & 7.1), all visitors, including EU citizens, if you intend staying in Spain for more than 3 months, there is a legal requirement to register with the Ministry of the Interior whether you are working or not. The new certificate of registration also includes the issuing of your N.I.E. (Numero de Identidad de Extranjeo – Number of Identity of Strangers) The procedure is similar to previous years, but the forms & documentary evidence are different. The forms can be collected from the National Police station in Ibiza Town, 9:00 till 14:00 Monday to Friday. The station is at the top of Isidor Macabich,
on the Avinguda La Pau. If you are going by bus to Ibiza town, get off at the Bus Terminal, up past the Parc de la Pau, and the Post Office (Correos), cross the Av. La Pau by the footbridge and it’s the old single storey building you see on your left as you cross the bridge. As well as a three part form, Modelo 790 issued by the Interior Ministry, you will receive an application form and a top sheet (in Spanish) explaining what is required. You must fill the forms in using a Black biro, and in capitals.

Take the completed Modelo 790 to a bank, (most open from 8:00 till 2:00) along with your passport and 6.80 euros, they will receipt the document and retain the bottom copy. Fill in sections 1 and 4 of the application form and then get this photocopied, along with a photocopy of your passport.
To get your application processed, as with previous years, you must go to the National Police station before 9:00 (I suggest 7:00 or earlier) and an officer will issue you with a numbered & dated ticket. There are a limited number of tickets issued at 9:00everyday and they call out the number from the steps when it is your turn to be seen.

For EU citizens the actual recording and processing time is about five minutes but the waiting time can be hours. If your ticket number is 15 or above you should have time to grab a coffee and a comfort break. You can queue, get your numbered ticket, then ask for the forms, fill them in, go to the Copy Shop opposite the Post Office (Correos) and copy the application form and passport, go to a bank, along with your 6.80 euros and get

the Modelo 790 form receipted, and be back in time to be seen. Once your documents have been processed, you will receive back your photocopy of your application form, stamped by the officer, one copy of Modelo 790, and asked to return in a week, with your passport and the forms.
When you return to collect your certificate you do not have to queue to get a numbered ticket, just present your forms & your passport and in return you will get your certificate which also states your N.I.E. number.

Technically you must carry the certificate and your passport at all times, and the certificate is not valid unless presented with the identify that was used to receive the certificate, i.e. your passport. DI suggest that you carry your photo ID part of your driving licence or a UK citizen card (they love anything with a picture on it), and a copy of your passport and the certificate. If you intend doing anything official, then take the original documents with you.

The top sheet explanation document is basically saying what you require to be processed.
1. Pasaporte o Tarjeta de Identidad, en vigor (Original y fotocopia) – A valid
Passport or national Identity Card, original & photocopy.
2. Justificante de pago da la Tasas correspondientes – 6.80 en el Banco –
Form Modelo 790 receipted by the bank to a value of 6.80 euros
3. Impreso de solicitud y fotocopia del mismo, debidamente cumplimentados

– The completed application form and a photocopy of the same.
4. Tarjeta de Residencia caducada, en los casos de renovacion. – The
Residencia card, in the case of renewing. If you have the completed application form and your passport, you can visit any of the five Phone Box shops around San Antonio and San Antonio Bay to get it photocopied before heading off to the Police Station to queue. You can also use the Phone Box to surf the web, download and print the translation document and the application form.
