, which is about 20 km, but should take only half an hour from the capital. Here you can see the iglesia (church), with thick white walls surrounded by the vía crucis (Way of the Cross). The center of San José is not large, given that most inhabitants have moved out to the country.
is 15 km from San José and is ’s most frequented town. You’ll know you’ve reached when you get to a roundabout with a big boat on top of it; a controversial homage to Cristobal Colon (Christopher Columbus). Some historians maintain he was born here.

Santa can be reached through taking the road that goes from to San Juan ,which starts at the roundabout where the Puerto Deportivo Nueva (Marina) is, close to the famous club Pacha . Things to watch out for in here are the Paseo Marítimo (board walk) and the tiny nearby towns such as San Carlos and Santa Gertrudis , which conserve traditions and a more simple, old-fashioned way of life.

San Juan, the island’s smallest town, is where most of ’s forest lands are. The , some of which are really hidden away, are the cleanest you will find. The center is very small in relative to the size if the municipality.

is also called Sant Antoni in Catalan and popularly in in Spanish. Sant Antoni is the second largest town in and is a major tourist spot on the island. This city is located near all the famous on the island: ( Cala Bassa, Cala Tarida ). Passeig de la mar, a walk situated around the San Antoni Bay (Badia de ), is a lovely place to stroll around at night. At one end of the walk is the Sa Punta de Moli (a place where the Ibicencans maintain an old mill), while at the other is the center with the beautiful fountain that dances to music. The sunset is another one of the popular attractions of San Antoni . The best place to view the sunset is near the world famous bars Café del Mar, Savannah and Mambo or at the other end, restaurant Khumaras. Rural is a refreshing discovery for those used to thinking of the island as a night life hotspot. Much of it is, as a matter of fact, bucolic, charming and peaceful. Compared to the other towns on the island of , whose traditions over the years have given way to the demands of the booming tourist industry, the Municipality of Sant Joan de Labritja is to this day still dependent on cattle-raising and agriculture. A complete mini resort and one of s best known spots, Cala de Portinatx is situated in the northern area of the island, in the municipality of Sant Joan de Labritja . There are 3 excellent sandy in the area of Portinatx offering a variety of activities such as wind surfing, pedaloes and diving. The largest beach is on the bay and offers a breathtaking panoramic view and a seabed of powdery white sand. It is across from the main Coach Park,

S’Arenal Gros. The more private one, S Arenal Petit , is a smaller beach and is right around the corner from the bay. Porto Beach , situated in a sheltered inlet at the end of the main road, is surrounded by pine tree covered hillocks.

To get to San Jose , tourists will need to get off the road to the airport about twenty kilometers (or thirty minutes) from the capital at the roundabout where McDonald s is. This village sits high on top of the hills right in the middle of Sanjoseland . Although first and foremost an actual living village (as opposed to a tourist center), San Jose nevertheless has everything the average everyday tourist might want to go looking for: bars, restaurants, shops, an arbor, winding streets, as well of course the basic essentials to any village like medical centers, schools, vets, and the Town Hall. At San Jose , one can see the church or iglesia built in pure Ibizan style: white thick walls encircled by the via crucis or the way of the cross, along which path saints are taken on procession during Patron Saint holidays. Behind the iglesia which dominates the village, one can find the Can Manyanet , a restaurant where one can sample and enjoy such typical Ibicencan food as Sofrit Pages (lamb casserole with chicken, potatoes and saffron) right in the middle of a garden. Right across the other side of the main road, El Destino serves tapas (a fusion of traditional Spanish vegetables, pulses and meats), and in the arbor opposite, is the Bar Bernat Vinya where one can see old-timers gather round the shaded tables to while away their time playing card games and bandying about hunting game with the Podenco (Ibicencan hound), whose pictures plaster the walls. In the San Jose shops, one can buy everything from traditional Ibicencan baskets and pottery, beach mats, farm implements to designer bathroom suites, children s toys, one could even buy whole farms altogether. In this small but perfectly formed village with a stunning view of three sides of the island, the rat race is unheard of as everybody takes their own sweet time living the good life.

The municipality of Santa del Rio is located on the east portion of the island. It is named after one of the island s rivers that has long since ran dry. In contrast to San Antoni, Santa Eulària is best know for its encompassing peace as it is located far from the bars and night clubs. Even then, the municipality has an endless array of attractions including, almond -dotted fields, , abundant artistic heritage as well as museums (such as The Ethnological Museum of Piti , and the Museum of Barrau ). Of course a visit to would not be complete without seeing the sights at Dalt Vila (or high town ). The best way to explore Dalt Vila would be on foot, in comfortable shoes, trekking through the narrowly winding steep cobbled streets and viewing the stunning vista from the spaces in the high ramparts and wide terraces at every level. The main entrance is along a slope, flanked by huge statues made out of roman stone and crossing a drawbridge though the Portal de Tablas . Going into the ancient courtyard of cobbled stones, the view immediately gives way to the Plaza de Vila or main square. The Portal Nou entrance on the other hand, descends more gradually. Here, traditionally clad Ibicencos, seemingly left behind by time, go about their daily lives in the ancient, Gothic Catalan buildings that over hang the streets. Strong wooden doors standing ajar reveal wide stone courtyards and small chapels. The gift shops as well as art galleries situated on the walk up to the cathedral are treasure troves of the beautiful workmanship of the talented local craftsmen. If one looks down from the battlements by the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Snows dominating the town skyline, one can see wonderful panoramic views of the red tiled cupolas of the Santo Domingo church . From this vantage point, one can also spot the statue of the Ibicenco hero of the Cuban War, General Joaquin Vara de Rey , standing proudly on his monument right at the very center of the Main Square bearing its name. In , one can find one of the world s most impressive museum collections of Roman artifacts. A lot of the artifacts on display can be found exclusively on the island. The museum Museo Puig des Molins set in the Carthaginian burial grounds is a must see. On July 2002, a room full of armaments, pottery and other objects used in the Ibicencan everyday way of life from Phoenician times right up to the 13 th century was discovered in an exit to the outside of the old castle in town. It is an old Ibicencan custom to build rooms to be used as a way for the townsfolk to retreat into the castle in times of attack. To stop the attackers from following them inside, the Ibicencans would fill the room with earth to securely block the entrance from the outside. It is thought that the room that was discovered, which connected two of the castle towers during the Arab occupation of the island, remained buried full of earth when the castle was overrun by invading knights from mainland Spain . Because of this, all the objects found in the room are in good condition and today gives archaeologists valuable insight into the ancient way of life in

July and August are the really hot months so t-shirts, short sleeves and short pants are in order. Also popular among the residents are lightweight cotton trousers.

November to April is winter season. is not a beach destination during the winter months although because of the islands mild climate, the temperature rarely drops below 0 Celsius. Daytime temperature averages about 15 Celsius - but can rapidly rise to 25 Celsius on the days when the sun comes out. On days like these, one can often find beach bums on the beach, a lot of whom still swim. during winter however, is more a time for languorous beach walks, sports, and island tours, than anything else, but in return, the winter tourists have the whole island all to themselves, with deserted without sun beds to spoil the view.

Culture
Over the years, with the influx of an ever growing number of foreigners to and the resultant employment of the local residents into the tourism industry, the younger generation has discarded a lot of the Ibicencans customs and traditions. Nevertheless, quite a number of the legendary Ibicencans traditions have been preserved by many of the older generation.

A lot of the older Ibicencans country folk still wear the traditional black blouse and petticoats for women and the beret for the men. The women s dress in particular, is quite noteworthy with an apron on top of several layers of petticoats worn one on top of the other all the way down to the ankles producing a crinoline effect. A silk-fringed embroidered shawl worn over a black blouse tops the whole ensemble. When working in the fields, women often wear a soft straw sombrero over a head scarf for protection against the sun. During more festive occasions, women braid their hair into a long plait, and cover it with a scarf. The men on the other hand, dress in a much more typically European fashion, but, like the women, the material for the clothing is mainly black and would usually include either a beret or a soft felt hat of the Panama type. With the little girls, it is usual for them to have their ears pierced sometime after they learn to walk and a lot of them wear little gold earrings.

Festivals
Another aspect of the Ibicencans traditions that has been preserved are the folklore displays which are still performed and can be witnessed during the annual town fiestas or during the popular celebrations held in the churches around the island all year round. This gives the dance troupe a chance to exhibit their colorful typical costumes in all its splendor.

The culture and folklore is in turn an amalgam of the different cultures of the various people the colonized the island in the past. And then of course there is the dancing. Executed in a repetitive manner with its Moorish characteristics, in one of these, the leader is portrayed as beating a drum with one hand while playing a shepherd so flute on the other hand. In several of the dances, the dancers also substitute the drums with castanets as big as their hands called castañuelas . Other traditional dances, the Sa Llarga and the Sa Curta, portray flirtation between men and women. The women circle their suitors while the men showcase their masculine abilities by jumping and playing their castañuelas.

Aside from the dress, the traditional dances, songs, and celebrations, some of the ancient farming techniques are still used in the fields. For several of them, man and beast still remain the driving forces of their way of life. This being the case, the farmers are able to work even the smallest plots of land which would otherwise have been inaccessible with a modern tractor. Besides ploughing, rolling and harrowing, which is still being done to this day, in the bygone days, horses were also put to the task of pulling carts for use as personal transportation and for delivering farm products. While these horse-drawn carts are still abundant in certain parts of the island, their number is at present insufficient to supply the demands of the millions of tourists that visit every year. Also still in existence are horse-driven water pumps which were replaced at some point by windmills and which in turn gave way to electric motors.

An interesting sight is the threshing and winnowing of the farm-grown corn. Ibicencans farmers cut the corn by hand and lay them out on the threshing floor which comprises a wide round area of either ground or concrete (a number of these threshing floors can still be seen around the island. A man then stands in the center and has the horse plod slowly around in circles and trample the corn until all the grain has been expelled. The farmer then removes the straw with large forks and leaves the wind to blow the chaff away.

As a result of both tourism and modernization some traditions have died out and others are rapidly following. However it is hoped that this extraordinary way of life will continue well into the future.

s biodiversity is a primary reason as to why it is honored by being declared as a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO). Biodiversity or Biological Diversity refers to the sum of all the different species of animals, plants, fungi, and microbial organisms living on Earth and the variety of habitats in which they live in. In , there’s so much of nature you can behold and you can rest assured that they are all well-protected and preserved. Of course, on top of that is its gorgeous weather.
